Medicare to hold payments starting March 1, 2010

CMS is expected to hold the processing of claims for up to 10 business days - the maximum amount of time CMS is able to hold claims. This will ensure that if Congress acts next week, claims can be processed and paid at the rate Congress specifies, sparing you from feeling the impact of the cut.

By law CMS cannot pay clean claims sooner than 14 days and paper claims sooner than 29 days. In the past, CMS has held off on processing physician claims for a few days when it appeared a payment change was near. This enabled the agency to process the claims just one time and pay at the corrected rate, but delayed your payments by a few days in the process.
