Common 2008 Coding Change Concerns


The new coding changes for 2008 were updated and implemented successfully and without too much confusion. However, there are still a few areas which cause some misunderstanding. These include changes or additions in the areas of smoking cessation, female organ carcinoma in situ ICD-9 codes, nursing home codes, and laboratory metabolic panels as outlined below.

Smoking Cessation Code Changes

The HCPCS codes that were in last year G0375 and G0376 have been deleted and replaced with new CPT codes:

99406 - Smoking and Tobacco use cessation counseling visit; intermediate, greater than 3 minutes up to 10 minutes

99407 - Smoking and Tobacco use cessation counseling visit, intensive greater than 10 minutes

Nursing Home Codes Changes

80048 - Basic Metabolic Panel (Calcium, total)
