PhyLogic Increases Green Efforts

PhyLogic is continuing its commitment to being an environmentally aware and proactive organization.

Over the past few months, the company has made several important steps to increase recycling and lower the overall environmental impact of our operations.

One of the most obvious concerns in PhyLogic’s operations is the large amount of paperwork often required, and therefore the amount of actual paper products used by not only PhyLogic, but also by the medical practices we serve.

PhyLogic’s commitment to paper reduction is taking place on three levels:

1- Reduction of Paper in the Information Transfer Process
The transfer of medical billing- related information from our medical practice clients to PhyLogic consumes an enormous amount of paper. Many practices still utilize paper charge slips or “superbills” to forward patient and billing information. Add copies of patient insurance cards and other items and the volume adds up to a significant drain on our natural resources. PhyLogic has implemented new information transfer methodologies including integrated online charge slips, card scanning and integrated Electronic Medical Records – all of which transfer data electronically and eliminate the related paper.

2- Internal Paper Report Reductions
Our automated AMD Collector processes build electronic claim works queues which are not only more efficient in our efforts to follow-up on outstanding patient and insurance claims, but also eliminate the need to print and work from large paper reports. And when we do print paper reports, they are generally printed in duplex, reducing the amount of sheets required to complete the job.

3- Electronic Payments and EOB’s
When possible, PhyLogic makes efforts to accept payment from carriers using electronic EOB’s and payments. Not only does this speed up the process, but the reduction in physical paper generated is dramatic.

4- Recycle, Recycle, Recycle
The steps above significantly reduces the amount of paper used in the PhyLogic billing process, but does not eliminate it altogether. So if you ever wondered what happens to all those EOB’s, copies of cards and paper superbills that get forwarded to PhyLogic, the answer is scanning and recycling. Of course, PhyLogic is required to maintain records of all these documents, and the biggest challenge is in scanning the documents prior to recycling. PhyLogic’s Technical Operations department runs high-speed scanners and can typically scan, save and organize between 7,000 to 9,000 sheets per day. That translates to well over two million sheets of paper scanned and recycled every year (and that does not include the paper reports and other non-scanned items which are recycled by PhyLogic). Of course, all such paperwork is securely shredded prior to recycling.

Other “green” efforts at PhyLogic includes the utilization of a new, more efficient HVAC system. The new computerized environmental control system is designed to heat and cool our offices using dramatically less energy than the previous system.

PhyLogic plans to continually increase our paper reduction efforts along with our clients. After all, PhyLogic is not only committed to maximizing physician reimbursement, but also to doing so in an environmentally responsible manner.
