Billing for Therapeutic Injections, Immunizations and Allergy Injections

It has been brought to our attention that there appears to be confusion as to which codes should be used when billing for Therapeutic Injections, Immunizations and Allergy Injections. This notice is to explain the correct use of the specific codes.

  • THERAPEUTIC INJECTIONS

Code 90782 Subcutaneous or intramuscular injection
You would also need to specify the material injected and in most cases would bill for the material injected. Examples: Vitamin B12 (J3420), Toradol (J1885), Vistaril (J3410)

  • Intramuscular Injection of Antibiotic (specify)

Code 90788 Example: Bicillin (J0570)

  • IMMUNIZATION ADMINSTRATION

Code 90471 One vaccine (single or combination vaccine / toxoid)

Code 90472 EACH additional vaccine

Example if you gave three immunizations you would bill
(1unit) 90471 and (2 units) 90472

You would also bill for the specific immunization codes 90476 – 90749

**Please note when billing for PPD Code 86580 you will not be paid for an administration code **

  • ALLERGY INJECTION

Code 95115 Professional Services for allergen immunotherapy not including provision of allergenic extracts, single injection

Code 95117 two or more injections

NOTE: You should not bill 90471 / 90472 with Allergy Codes
