Coding Update: Nursing Home E/M Codes to Change

There will be a number of changes to the E/M codes for nursing home patients for 2006.

As of January 1, 2006, the 99301 code used for nursing home annual assessments will be deleted and will be most likely be replaced with a similarly defined code, 99318.

The nursing home visit code 99302 (used for a major change in the patient’s condition) will be replaced by a new series of codes, 99307-99310, in which the provider must select the most appropriate code.

Similarly, the current subsequent care code series, 99311-99313 is to be replaced by the 99307-99310 series.

Lastly, the 99303 admission code will be replaced by a new series, 99304-99306. The appropriate code will be determined by the condition of the patient at the time of admission.

All providers affected by these code changes should make themselves familiar with the new codes and adjust their superbills or charge slips accordingly.
